The critical distinction
Cage length describes the containment. Operating distance describes the functional relationship between the ball-release point and the athlete. The machine body, operator position, screens, entry and run-off still need space around that relationship.
Start with the training layout. Then confirm that the selected cage can contain the entire configuration and meet every product instruction.
Mark the hitting position and account for stance, swing clearance, plate reference, tee work and stable footing. The athlete should not be pushed against the end of the containment simply to create more distance elsewhere.
Consider handedness and how the athlete enters, resets and retrieves balls between drills.
The most demanding regular drill sets the required functional path. Tee work uses little ball-flight distance. Front toss adds a thrower and controlled path. Machine hitting must follow the selected manufacturer's operating and setup guidance.
If multiple drills will happen in the lane, map each layout and use the configuration with the greatest space demand.
For a thrower, include their working position and protection. For a pitching machine, include the release point, full machine footprint, legs, controls, feed chute, optional feeder, operator position and protective screen.
Leave the access required to adjust, test, feed, stop and move the equipment according to current instructions.
